Another very important reason latency requirements are low is that it is very easy to get motion sickness in VR if the frame-rate is not fast enough. Since your brain feels like you should be moving at a different speed than what your eyes are seeing, you get thrown off.

I took the VR decal a few semesters ago and we had Jack McCauley, the original engineer that developed the first 3 oculus products, speak to us. He argued that latency is not the cause of motion sickness. You can see his slides here https://www.slideshare.net/AugmentedWorldExpo/jack-j-mccauley-oculus-cofounder-accurate-head-tracking-for-virtual-reality

@bchee thanks for the share! I guess I was one of those who had an assumption that latency causes motion sickness. I thought that one of the practical devices for curing motion sickness, the gyroscope, was pretty cool. There's an article here detailing how it can help solve issues with balance https://bit.ly/2WbjILa.

Interesting slides by McCauley, I never would have guessed that the visual artifacts as well as improper audio delays would have a more visceral effect on the viewer than high latency.

VR systems range dramatically in the quality of their hardware from full gaming computers with dedicated graphics (HTC Vive) to just on your phone (google cardboard). Perhaps, since latency is not as important this allows for smaller systems without dedicated hardware

eliot1019

Interesting article that says adding adding a virtual nose reduces motion sickness. https://www.wired.com/2015/04/reduce-vr-sickness-just-add-virtual-nose/

What are some other requirements for a truly immersive VR experience?

zehric

@tyleryath Maybe someday when we can directly connect our brains to computers, all our senses can be fully immersed in VR. I think for now, though, even if latency and resolution are taken care of, we need a more intuitive input method for experiences to be better.

I remember that Playstation requires its VR software to run at least 60 fps to ensure VR experience

@bchee, what did he say is the cause of motion sickness?
