This reminds me of low poly art! Here are some cool examples: https://www.awwwards.com/low-poly-illustration-what-s-the-secret.html What I find interesting is that this was first done as an optimization technique to reduce the load on the graphics pipeline, but it is now a coveted art style used web design and video games. Funny how that works.

There is a method to improve the resolution of the simplified model with textures. Here is the article https://arxiv.org/pdf/1602.06645.pdf, which presents an extension to the KinectFusion algorithm which allows creating simplified 3D models with high quality RGB textures.
