It's interesting to look at how the soft shadows and hard shadows differ greatly in the way the light wraps around the object. For the soft shadows, it seems that the shadows are wrapping around the object. Meanwhile, for the hard shadows, it looks lot harsher on the object, and the light is a lot more focused.
