In some areas e.g. legs and tails, we observe bizarre patterns that look similar to Moiré pattern in previous lectures caused by a square grid in certain directions. Are these patterns actually alias?

I think in this case it might be the genuine pattern due to the geometry of the surface. The irregular surface geometry of the mesh combined with the perfect specularity result in these strange moire-like patterns due to the grid pattern around the room. You can actually see warping like this on statues like the Cloud Gate in certain angles.

I think this behavior can be intuitively explained when you imagine trying to project a square onto a round surface, it'll distort and "wrap" around the surface and round out. I think that phenomenon is happening with the rectangular outlines on the wall and the irregularly round surfaces on the mesh.
