That is very fascinating! So this explains why glossy/highly reflective object just look more “smooth”, and diffuse objects look more “rough”, although those are not strictly visual parameters. I’ve always just intuitively known that, but I was never able to explain why. This slide really put things into perspective though!

And I guess a natural follow up question is: are there exceptions to this rule? In other words is every glossy object guaranteed to have a less jagged microfacet appearance than a diffuse one?
