Wouldn't a smaller lens aperture result in a smaller field of view? I'm thinking that it might block out all of the light close to the boundaries of the picture

I think because it blocks out all the lights close to the camera, objects that are far away can now be taken clearly. All the lights that are reflected by close objects are being filtered out, and the far objects' reflection now stands out. I am thinking this as decreasing aperture is similar as reducing nearby objects' "noise" to amplify the far objects.
