If anyone uses After Effects for 2D animation or motion graphics, there are some cool plugins which do 2D simulations like this! One of them is called Newton3 which has a bunch of different simulations, but is quite pricey! It has a free trial though that I always enjoy messing around with. I tried animating something like this by hand once or faking it with a bunch of other effects but it never came out as good as I liked. Now I wonder if I'll be able to code it in After Effects myself!
