This does seem faster, but I think it requires a bit of pre-processing to be as efficient as possible. Namely, it looks like you would have to understand the layout the three edges, and see which is on the left and which is on the right. Its possible to have 1 left + 1 right, 2 left + 1 right, or 1 left + 2 right, based on my understanding. In the case that you have 2 left or right, you also want to know when you transition between the top and the bottom edge. If you do all this however, it allows you to simply start moving from the left edge and stop once you hit the right one, which is faster.
