This is because the camera must be "relatively" still while the shutter is open, otherwise the image will come out blurry, as the position of the camera will have changed while the sensor is still collecting light. I imagine that this would mean we would see tradeoffs in low-light performance with this method, since we would not be able to gather much light per image.
