The Google Cardboard back in 2016 was also a very affordable ($20) yet complementary prototype that provided similar experience using just a smartphone, some foldable cardboard, and a simple lens. I think I have around 5 stored in the basement of my old house somewhere, but it was a great intro during the time when VR was growing insanely fast.

It was definitely a really cool concept, and the idea of the insert-your-own-phone has continued to have a little bit of traction since then especially as a novelty gift, but because there was so much latency, combined with the fact that most phones have very low resolution, it didn't make for a smooth experience. I remember when I did one of those "ride a rollercoaster" demos and got extremely nauseous by the end :(
