This reminds me of the bandpass filter we learned in the EECS 16B signal processing unit. We are only interested in preserving a certain range of frequencies.

I agree! We could use a low-pass filter and take the output as the input of a high-pass filter to block out those higher and lower frequencies. This can be achieved using second order or cascading filters.
