Why we need to apply low-pass filter before downsampling? Downsampling already decreases highest frequencies?

@jlian2 good point! This should technically say “low-pass filter it and subsample it” or just “downsample it”. Here, subsampling a 1D sampled signal by N means just keeping every Nth sample.
