From my research and understanding, specular highlights are important in 3D computer graphics, as they provide a strong visual cue for the shape of an object and its location with respect to light sources in the scene.

@ClaireLiu123 -- Yes, well put! Specular highlights are also typically much more challenging to handle in computer vision systems that try to disentangle the geometry, shiny material properties, texture of the object surface, and the surrounding lighting.
