In Blender, the default texture is called "Principled BSDF" and includes options for things like subsurface scattering, metallic, specular, roughness, clearcoat, etc. Is this the same thing as BSSRDF, or perhaps a generalization of it?

Good question. I would need to double check the Blender documentation to be sure, but some of these terms may be slightly inconsistent with technical literature. No big deal!
Bear with us slightly, and later in the course I will define BRDF, BSDF and BSSRDF precisely. This will be in connection with our physically-based rendering portion of the course.
