The MERL BRDF database is similar to the Cornell data in these slides. The "MERL 100" is a database of reflectance functions of 100 different materials. Just a free, cool, and open dataset for research and academic use: https://www.merl.com/brdf/.

What is the motivation behind measuring BRDF then using it to draw? Is it common to draw models of objects that we already have images of? ( or it is to measure something about the material of the object?)

BRDFs can also be used for object recognition and inverse rendering (extracting lighting information from images)
