I was wondering how one might go about rendering iridescent surfaces, like the one shown. I found that iridescence is generally rendered using spectral rendering, a technique in which colors are represented not by the typical red, green, blue format but by the wavelength of the light at that point. This makes sense intuitively, as the lighting on an iridescent object varies in terms of color itself instead of just value. How would someone go about calculating the respective wavelength for light at a certain pixel?

This paint, also known as "Mystichrome" is actually fairly famous for its color changing and iridescent effects (also see Nissan's Midnight Purple color, which is famous on its GTR models). Nowadays this color is really rare on Fords, since it was only done on a few Mustang models in the past, and most recently was put on a 1 of 1 Ford GT.
