I can see that this structure will resist shearing due to the x shaped connection, we won't be able to compress the square to a straight line without using substantial force. I think out of plane bending needs to be defined more clearly. Is it the event where the z dimensions changes in the bending process?

I think to be rigorous, the structure not resisting out-of-plane bending means that only a minuscule amount of force (approaching 0) needs to be used to displace a point mass in the structure slightly off its original position perpendicular to the plane.
