This effect reminds me of when you're in a dark room and someone takes a picture of you with their flash on. The flash would then remain in your eye even after you look away.

I feel like the human eye is like a camera - it has ISO and exposure time. Since there exists an exposure time, the color from previous images can persist. I read some theory about why we have the opponent color system: it allows the brain to process and interpret color more effectively, as it can detect contrast faster. However, if the change is too fast, the previous signal still exists in our brain.
