Summary for what follows:

A raster display is something that simply shows images as a rectangular array of pixels. There are two main types:

  1. Emissive - in these displays pixels directly emit light (think LED)
  2. Transmissive - in these displays pixels themselves don’t emit light but instead vary the amount of light that they allow to pass through them. There is usually some external light source or backlight (think LCD or mirrors)
