In this matching color experiment, this makes it clear why our hardware such as monitor and phone screens aren't able to show every single possible color. To make the two sides match, we end up giving up the color on the left by having a "negative" amount of light to make it match the right side. This makes it so we end up not being able to display the original color that we saw on the left.

A negative gamut might be the solution to this issue, but this means in real life that our displays are not able to achieve that particular color and that it is out of our color gamut.

To match the color we can essentially add "negative" amount of color to the other side by applying a primary light to the test color side.
