I wasn't quite sure what this term meant when looking through the slides, but after doing some searches it appears dynamic range is the range between the max and min values that can be perceived in an image or video. If there is more of a contrast between the deepest blacks and the brightest whites in the image, then there is a bigger dynamic range.

To add to @marivasq's comment, I've always heard of the terms 'HDR' being thrown own as a marketing term very frequently. Most recently, its become a very strong marketing component of iPhone cameras, boasting higher quality pictures with 'HDR', which reduces glare from the sun on particularly bright days. I've also seen these when buying desktop monitors, in which i'm not sure how HDR applies to them. It's very interesting to see the scientific background behind which the terms originates from
