Lecture 23: Virtual Reality (60)

What was the lens assembly like for the google cardboard? Is it the same as the other headsets mentioned earlier in the lecture slides? do the lens need to be different at all from phone to phone or is it all the same across the board? Or is it the phone screen that changes what is displayed for the lens to properly "convert" what is seen?

@muuncakez I think the idea of the Google cardboard is that it is just that; cardboard. So there wouldn't be an external lens setup. From what I know, I believe it relies on the lens that is builtin to the phone (as well as the full camera setup). I know the screen itself becomes darker in areas where your eyes are not meant to be looking (i.e. to emulate a real VR headset) but in general I think it's mostly a phone adapted to be a VR headset with as little material as possible.

This is a pretty cool tool for education. I remember in middle school, we got to try these out and learned things like what habitats looked like in different parts of the world, which I think is a very important thing to learn as a kid.
