This was something that occurred to me too while we were talking about sampling. I feel like one good thing to do would be to weight sample points by how close they are to the center of the pixel. Those are potentially more "relevant" to the color we would actually see at that location, so it keeps the image from being as blurry maybe? The weighting would have to be fairly weak to avoid going right back to aliasing, but it could improve image crispness without sacrificing all the benefits of anti-aliasing.
