Mesh downsampling seems like a counterintuitive idea, but I think it would be preferred over a higher sampled one for a couple reasons. For example, one might only require the shape of the object, rather than all the little details for whatever purposes they have. Or, they might wish to reduce computation by omitting extra details.

This recalls me that a video games art style called "low poly". This is especially useful in real-time rendering or on devices with limited hardware resources. And it is a really cool art style for video games.

I personally believe that downsampling is important here because it reduces memory usage and rendering speed. Furthermore, downsampling might be used to allow faster loading time on web applications across different devices.
