This first animation was actually created because Leland Stanford (founder of Stanford University) wanted to understand the details about how horses move in order to make his racehorses go faster. There's a legend that he placed a bet that horses sometimes had all four legs suspended in the air, and reached out to the photographer Edward Muybridge to help him settle his bet.
