Looking at this slide, these thoughts come to mind. I've always taken the explosive human progress of the past few decades for granted as if it is a natural process. Graduate school made me see the stunning research effort required to achieve that progress. Doing my assignments revealed the massive natural resistance we have to overcome to get anything that actually ends up working. It makes me appreciate the act of doing research and inspires me to keep working towards my Ph.D.
