What is the difference between normals and positions? My understanding is that normals refer to the direction normal to the plane?

Hmm, if I understand correctly, in this example, positions in the middle image are the same as positions in the left image. The normal vectors are perpendicular to the surface. But, the middle image uses normal vectors that are similar to right image even though all the points actually lie on a smooth(ish) sphere.

Is there any efficiency difference between perturbing normals and perturbing positions to create texture?
