Cave paining is part of human history. Unfortunately, most of them were eroded. This technology would enable the art to be protected or reproduced. This also reminds me about crypto art with the idea of digital scarcity.

@annyzhou -- yes, photogrammetry, 3D scanning, material measurement, etc. etc. are relevant parts of the computer graphics fields.

One of my PhD advisors, Marc Levoy, led the Digital Michelangelo project to scan Michelangelo's marble sculptures, in part to serve as a permanent archive of their 3D form.
