Is there an intuitive reason as to why the incident and exiting surface radiances differ? Off the top of my head, I feel like it's a similar concept as specular and diffuse radiation; in an ideal world, the radiance incident to a surface would reflect perfectly and thus be equal to the exiting radiance, but in reality there are factors like the absorbing qualities of the surface and the unevenness that cause the exiting radiance to be less.

What is the intuition for this? I don't really understand how the light exiting isn't equal to the light incident.
