Even in direct illumination, there seems to be a blurry shadow line on the wall. Wouldn't one expect the shadows to have proper outlines rather than some form of gradient?

@abaqai Soft shadows can appear with area light sources, even in direct illumination. An earlier lecture (https://cs184.eecs.berkeley.edu/sp22/lecture/12-10/monte-carlo-integration) showed soft/blurry shadows on the ground plane of a scene illuminated by an area light, since the light source will be only partially occluded at some points.
