This discussion of rendering fabrics makes me think of this famous optical illusion The Dress, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress. I wonder if it'd be possible to recreate the illusion using a render by modeling the fabric and lighting?

@rubywerman As far as I know I think the dress had more to do with identifying color in an ambiguous context (i.e. it was not obvious what color the lighting was, so even if it was unambiguous what the color of the pixels themselves were, people perceived them differently). Still, I'd bet that modeling the fabric accurately would help sell the illusion more accurately.
