Lecture 14: Material Modeling (70)

It's interesting that the image on the left looks "off", but it's difficult to place exactly what's wrong with it. This problem is common in computer graphics, and it's pretty surprising just how small of factors need to be accounted for to generate realistic images.

It is really interesting how this is very similar to many of the photo editing apps. When people want their skin to look smoother and edit out the pimples, the app uses rendering techniques like this to achieve the effects.

Adding on to @nwang19, the concept of the uncanny valley discusses in detail at which point an object bears resemblance to a human. Photorealism in media representations of humans must deal in subsurface scattering with skin, as well as pore stretching and, in some cases, stubble.

^ same observation as Linda! Are these the same principles Photoshop/airbrushing are based on? And at what point is it determined that it's smooth/"realistic" enough?

It's really interesting how much integration can do. The image on the left makes me think of uncanny valley while the one on the right looks much more realistic. This makes me wonder what the face would look like if an additional integral were used.
