I'm not sure I quite understand the math going on here. Does someone mind explaining why we are doing the math we are doing to trace lenses? How did we arrive to this formula?

Are these equations in any way related to the photometry ones we talked about earlier? The cone/plane setup looks similar, and the equations also have a similar format.
