If increased ISO gain always contributes to more noise, why would we ever need ISO? To answer my own question, apparently ISO helps increase brightness of an image according to this article. However, that effect isn't captured too clearly here.

Yeah ig like one example of where ISO gain is very important is nighttime photography, where there is very little light coming into the sensor - hence why we so many grainy pixels.
