Many smartphone cameras nowadays have special photography modes that try to mimic this natural blurring using software. From what I've seen, most of these effects are just on backgrounds that are farther away than the subject, but I wonder how difficult it is to account for these circles of confusion in the foreground as well.

You only see the blur kernel if you have a point light because otherwise the surrounding pixels are all blurred together. With a point light, the edge between light and dark makes it easier to visualize the blur kernel.

I don't think the current smartphone softwares do well on mimicking the blurring effect. They have trouble distinguishing objects at different depth. I wonder what possible optimizations could be used to distinguish the depths of object?
