Scenes like this are notoriously difficult to render in video games, since they are known as particle effects. The number of small particles along with the smooth motion each piece requires in different positions and directions makes computation heavy, thus the burden on GPU's rises, and particle effects become increasingly difficult to render to the point that the particle effects that PS5 renders is now known as very impressive (see Returnal as an example).

Caig Reynolds was one of the first researchers of this phenomenon and developed a computer program known as "Boids" in 1986.
