How necessary is a low level understanding of the structure of the eye to advance computer graphics research?

As a cog sci double major student, I have learned this a while ago and it's interesting to see this appearing again in this class. An interesting experiment that we can do to demonstrate this is to try to focus on something and tell the color of something else that moves from your side to your front: you will discover that objects really needs to be moved reasonably close to where you are focusing on to tell the color.
