From a photography class, I learned to adjust the white balance of pictures using Lightroom. The general idea is to make the white colors in a picture look more similar to the "true white color". For example, if a picture was taken with warm lighting, then we may want to make it more blue (less yellow) in order to make the white look like real white.

AWB is definitely a helpful tool at taking photos and make scenes look generally correct in color. But different images can produce different colors colors if the subject is changing color. For instance, this photographer shot 3 images of a carnival ride. The ride keeps changing colors.
