I find it interesting the assumption that the most similar pixel doesn't need to be nearby. One would assume that closeness would be a decent heuristic for similarity, and it is quite fascinating to observe that this is not the case.

I would also assume that such a method preserves the sharpness of the edges in a picture — is this correct?
