One can reduce the effects of spherical aberration by chipping away at the top and bottom of the lens so that the center of the lens sticks out more (looking more like a sideways normal distribution). This allows the rays intersecting the lens from the very top or bottom to extend farther and rays in the middle of the lens to converge more sharply.
