Alternatively, lots of video games use "Cel Shading" to make 3D objects appear flat or cartoonish. This involves displaying the entire surface with just one color and then applying only a few shades over subsets of triangles rather than computing the colors with normal vectors at each triangle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel_shading
