Something I love about (some) Pixar shorts is learning after the fact about what exactly they were meant to be an "experiment" in. For a long time, Pixar was always pushing the boundaries of what was possible in animation, and these shorts were often a great place to find examples of this - both from a technological standpoint and from a storytelling perspective. It's cool that even if you didn't know what a short was meant to be demonstrating, you could still appreciate it without even realizing that it was "showing off".
