The use of ray tracing in movie graphic design is probably the most exciting application of it. The Nvidia RTX platform has a very cool product that uses tensor cores for AI acceleration, reducing the number of rays needed. This accelerates the BVH traversal part, which is the most computationally expensive part of ray tracing calculations.

On this note, while ray tracing tech has been getting faster especially for real-time applications, there has also been a lot of improvement made in cutting the amount of work needed to be done, not just making that work faster.
