This very equation is intimately related to the theory of quantum groups. In fact, the defining relations of a quantum group can be written in terms of a reflection equation. It is a key ingredient in the construction of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, which plays an important role in the theory of integrable systems. Also, it can be used to construct solutions of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation, which is an important equation in conformal field theory.
