Lecture 13: Global Illumination & Path Tracing (62)

I was about to comment on how there seem to be serious diminishing returns after even one bounce. Ofcourse, the image looks better, brighter, and less noisy on the whole as the number of bounces goes up, but one bounce + some denoising or other techniques seems like it gets you most of the way there.

However, I just noticed that one major difference between two bounce and four bounce global illumination is in the reflections and transparent objects. Looking at all the vases in the frame, they all seem to get much stronger specular highlights on the fourth bounce, and look jet black on only two bounces. Similiarly, the lamp in the very top of the image is jet black until 4 bounces.
