The partially extended DOF image reminds me of a Split Diopter Lens. This is a lens addition that splits the DOF for an image halfway across, allowing for one side of the image to be far away from the lens and the other very close to it while retaining focus of both objects.

I was watching sp22 and Professor Ren has some crazy DoF effect going on and I remember him mentioning it was not software. It stuck with me because of just how well the effect was done and now I'm starting to understand more from these 2 lectures.
