(Not necessarily relevant to technical details but still fun for me to know more about) I guessed the nationality of the original developer of this algorithm by looking at his family name. I failed because it turned out that he is a French mathematician and physicist. There are places in southern France with the same name, so maybe I need to be more sensitive to French names next time!
