Lecture 15: Cameras & Lenses (107)

This reminds me of this these glasses that were trending before that had patterns like hearts and stars on the lenses. It's pretty neat that glasses with hearts on the lenses could make point lights appear as hearts, and I think it's cool that we've touched on it here and can assign a name to this effect!

I wonder what factors contribute to the quality and appearance of bokeh in a photograph? and how does the choice of lens and aperture shape the bokeh effect?

I notice stylistically most photographers choose a circle-shaped bokeh to show unfocused lights in the background, which makes sense because it's more natural. But in this photo, the hearts right behind doggo are actually really clean-cut. How is this possible if the lights were blurry to begin with?

Professor Ren mentioned that this type of aperture shape only works if the lens aperture is near the end of the lens, however, can you predistort the bokeh shape so that by the time it reaches the sensor, it will have the desired shape?

Are there advantages to non-circular aperture / bokehs? Hard to see how hearts could be objectively better than a circle, but would squares / other polygons capture different/better information at times?
