Normal camera records irradiance information and light field camera records radiance imformation. And it can reconstruct irradiance later to simulate a normal one.

The fact that we can map sensor pixels to 4D data while maintaining pretty good image quality shows that traditional cameras may not be capturing as much information as it theoretically could. Microlenses are revolutionary in that it allows each tiny lens to capture a small representation of the world, and in its aggregate it can do cool stuff like refocusing on different parts of the image.
