How do 360 degree cameras like the ones they use for Google maps work? I'd imagine there are multiple cameras or lenses inside, but would they need to do some perspective transforms to stitch them all together for it to look as smooth as it does?

Is this similar to the mechanism of a virtual (VR) view of an apartment on those leasing website? Some images were taken on site at specific positions of this area, and several images taken on various position within this area (For example, take a picture every 10 feet) are formed together into a 360 degree camera view

For some reason, I always imagined that these street view images were just recorded by Google for the public, rather than using them for identification purposes in machine learning and adding additional detail to the mapping pipeline. It's amazing just how much an entity can do with data, and how many different domains of computer science come together to produce something like an accurate and useful map of the world.

Seems like there are various methods to stitch together images, such as pixel-based (compare pixels between two images minimize their differences when joining together), feature-based (identifying key image features and applying the appropriate transformations to each image), etc. https://iaeme.com/MasterAdmin/Journal_uploads/IJCIET/VOLUME_9_ISSUE_12/IJCIET_09_12_011.pdf

Really curious how 360 degree cameras work, do they stitch together photos, or are frames of videos being saved to stitch together a seamless 360 camera?
